Turnings are the first things I did as a woodworker. Turning has a relative sense of immediacy that I love. It is such a spontaneous and organic process. You have to trust your skills and let it evolve. You can get a spectacular piece in an hour!
I try to let the wood dictate to me. When I have a vision for a bowl, the process can be more complex, especially if it involves some non-traditional processes. As a carver, it is a natural extension for me to carve turnings.
